I had the pleasure to make the acquaintance of T. Moffatt Burriss, WWII 82d ABN veteran and author of "Strike and Hold" (great read!), a few months back at the rededication of the Army National Guard Museum in Columbia, SC. We did a military timeline and had several many vehicles including Dane Coffman's WWI ambulance, several WWII jeeps, M38s and a couple Humvees - and a ton of Kraut stuff as well. A great time was had by all ...
Mr. Burriss was very accommodating, and once I baited him significantly to follow me, he enjoyed visiting with the 82d ABN reenactor contingent onsite. I was a little disappointed that they didn't recognize him at first, but then as it dawned on them who he was they really opened up and asked some really good questions about the gear they had laid out. Mr. Burress was impressed with the array of stuff they had on display, and wondered aloud "How in the world did we carry all that junk, let alone jump out of an airplane wearing it!?" Fun.
Mr. Burriss still lives in Columbia, as far as I know, and I was lucky enough to find a SC public radio interview featuring his story: scetv.org/podcastmedia/audio/walter_edgars_journal/05_24_13.mp3
Anyway, sorry to ruin the story by appearing in the photo, but here it is.
