Jim contacted me via PM about possibly tuning up an axe for him. He sent me this... So sorry my friend, but even I can do nothing with this... Well maybe I can!!! I believe that this was a WW2 era head. It has the exact same shape as others verified. Now for the real story. This is the second axe head he sent me. This I know I can do something with, and have started.

Jim, I think you should tell the story. Where in hell did you find this, and why did you keep it? Now, like I said , the measurements fit the WW2 axe specs There is no way to find the makers mark , it's gone! But, lesson !! Look close at the peeling, It again shows how good axe heads are forged! Front tip, and rear handled piece. The axe head you sent to be fixed, shows this as well. The Captain explained it best in his post !!! Craft long gone, except for the Gransford Bruks company of Sweden!!!! Go figure!

Hee! The one on top I found with a metal detector looking for a property corner. Call it professional courtesy, but I always drag such stuff out of the woods so the next surveyor doesn't waste a bunch of time digging for the same stuff I wasted a bunch of time digging up. The decent head I've contracted the whisperer to build me a silk purse, festooned with Hains Garage regalia, for display in the Will-is cave. JB

I wish the one you dug up was in good shape. That would have been a real keeper. It matches the Kelly, and Collins Legitimus shape almost perfectly. Solid, would have been a four pounder. I wonder how in got into the ground, and when. That is just some cool stuff.

Jim's axe head is an old one . I will show the hardened steel on the cutting edge, as well as the softer steel in the body in the backside. This cleaned head, really shows it well. The head has been re handled , and primed with three coats of red oxide primer. I took a few liberties on the new handle. It's wrapped!!! You can't see yet!

Looking good Bro Hains! Any idea on the vintage of that head? Thanks for your trouble. Looking forward to seeing your "embellishments"!

I'm glad you like it! Looks great by that can! I took some pics before I sent it to you. I like the manufacturing stamp best! It won't fit the Jeep, but it's your and one of a kind no doubt. I don't know why, but I am smitten with the axe and shovel thing. And thank you for what you sent me!!! What a surprise! And yes, the little Jeep was intact, and in my display case!

Thought about building a little scrap wood box for the Jeep. Y'know, "Jeep in a crate". Didn't have the right stuff, though.
Did you toss that clip on the garage floor?

Jim...
I never saw this thread originally. I had no idea you liked to relic hunt. I got a metal detector last year as a birthday present. I had one as a kid and found a lot of neat old things in the yard I grew up in. The property dated back to a long time ago....some of the cooler finds was a spoon, trunk lock (brass) and a belt buckle. Alas, I'm not living on historic lands now and I can't find anywhere to go play like a kid anymore. If I can ever find some time, I might need to venture north and roll with you!
