For the first time in recent memory, it rained five inches on the last day of July, in North Texas at that......can't complain...we are beyond dry.
Soooo, back to the story..... last week, I borrowed a cargo trailer trailer to move some furniture around. On my last day off, I loaded some more stuff in it, hooked to the ole trusty rusty B Farmall, and parked it with the tractor in the pasture beside my house to get it out of the driveway for the time being.
Well, yesterday evening, I figured I need to get it out, go unload it while there's a break in the rain...... figure no big deal, the ground is hard packed where it is parked, and slightly down hill.... So I fires off the the ole trusty Farmall, put'er in first, start gently down hill.... Went about 10 feet before the row crop front end caught a small rut and drove me, tractor, trailer into the spot I was trying to avoid, my old 1/2 acre garden patch...knowing I couldn't stop, I shifted into second, gave'er full throttle. Hoping the power and momentum from those eighteen horses will keep me going......well, nooooot exactly.
I looks over toward the house, wife looking straight at me through living room winder......busted!!! She walks outside, asked me if I knew it rained, and what am I going to do now, in her best smart alecky tone of voice, I says plan B! The Willis! I managed to unhook trailer from tractor, was able to drive the tractor far enough away from the trailer to hook the jeep on to it, before the tractor REALLY sunk..oh well...it can be a yard ornament until it drys out...
I hooked the never say die Willis up to the trailer, noticed the Willis is already sunk to the axles....and wife shaking her head.....Put the willys in low range, and gave'er the gas....Go devil winds up tight, NDCCs clawing and slinging good ole Texas black gumbo, we start to move!!! Gain some momentum, make quick shift to second, Go devil not giving up, still humming it's proud song of determination!!!! Moving.....mud flying..inch by inch.....yard by yard....we make it to the road, then back in the driveway!!
In the defining moment of triumph and glory, when the battle is over, when all is right in a mans soul..................all the wife wants to know when I'm planning to fix all those big ruts I just made in our pretty pasture........Dang Wimmen, they just don't get it, lol!
