I already showed this to the moose . I know it's not a WWII jeep extinguisher . However it is Brass and very cool. I am going to mount it on my fender. It seems like it's broken with something rattling around inside. It looks like the cap is soldiered on. Anyone with any experience taking these apart?

Very cool and Brassy. When I mount a fire suppression system I prefer one that will work if needed.

I'm no expert, but I think the extinguisher may be WWII era, or close. The bracket is what's not right, but RFJP has both the early and late style bracket. Among other differences, the late style bracket has two clamps to hold the ext., the early has only one. Some extinguishers have the pumping handle centered in the top, some have it offset like yours. I don't know about the early bracket, but the late one accepts the offset handle like yours. What's rattling inside is part of the pump mechanism. They were originally filled with carbon tetrachloride, you don't want to mess with that. I intend to display one like it in my GPW, but a modern, useable extinguisher will be available. BW

If you are going to mount that incorrect F/E on your incorrect jeep, you ought to do it on the interior side panel opposite of where the shovel spade rests. OR, since you are pounding out a CJ military jeep, why don't you research as many 121st Inf Regt jeep pictures as you can and see where they typically mounted their fire extinguishers.
The later war jeeps all came with mounts fixed on the inside panel near your left leg. Under the passenger seat they had pre drilled holes and screws installed for the decontaminator. I'm not positive for the early war jeeps, but I think their F/E was located in the same spot. However, only one in so many jeeps were issued the decontaminator , and this was on the unit level, so it was somewhat common to see those mounted on the fender.
Just my two cents, John Wayne.

Carbon Tet is now considered hazardous. Halon also. They sure look cool though. Pyrene were the common WW2 F/E. Moosey don't you think Haines is the type that needs something like a decontaminator?

Here is the ordinance maintenance manual from 1943. Talks about use, maintenance, disassembly, etc... Fire Extinguisher Your fire extinguisher isn't listed, but steps to take them apart should be similar. Here is a photo of mine after I cleaned it up. It is featured in this manuals' last few pages... Moose is right. These are rarely mounted to the fender, but they are so cool, they deserve to be seen. Tim

I could not agree with you more Sir Hawk! I knew I saw that mounting location somewhere..... As I see in your pic, as well as mentioned by Sir Bruce, perhaps I will look into getting a different bracket. Thanks for sharing that link.

Your jeep is already so far from being by the book, it would be ridiculous to have something that is actually correct on it now. Have you ever seen Caddyshack? You're very much Al Czervick. The custom gasket...I use this stuff all over my Willys. It's from the rolling steel garage door world and is used as a baffle seal at the top of the rolling coiling type doors. It's rubber impregnated with a fiber mesh. I used it for the anti-squeak material between fenders and tub, etc... Very durable and doesn't hold moisture. I have lots of this stuff. If anyone wants some, let me know. Tim

(Read my post from three years ago) . The way that I preserve history is most simple. I allow others much more knowledgable than I to share their passion. This CJ2A is mine. I think you know exactly what I am talking about. It's all about the excitement!!! My Jeep is completely correct, in every facet of its being. I have put my heart into it. When it's done, it's done. Until then, I think I shall fab my own bracket. Thank you for the inspiration!

Seeing that I cannot let my extinguisher rattle , and though I am not knowledgeable in their operation, I do what I always do. Dive in! I can see the cap is soldiered on. I dawn the mask just to be safe, and fire up the tourch. With some heat and a few simple taps with the Collins Legitimus hammer, the cap comes off. I find the inside valve to be separated from the cap. No chemicals seem present. A close up of the plunger mechanism.

The inner valve was broke away from the cap. I cleaned it up and soldiered it back in place . The hardest part was getting the tube on the large casing to insert into the valve in order to keep the label facing forward. It took a few tries to get straight. I then soldiered the cap back on. That's enough for the night. Maybe tomorrow polish a bit.

I have two Pyrenes, one on each of my G503's. I've always thought the fire fighter name and the looks of them to be very cool. Maybe when you install a strap to the bracket, you could make it dual purpose. One for looks and then a real functional one to swap into the bracket for actual trail driving? My '51 M38 had a bracket on the fender similar to Hawkys. I put it back and found a useable current extingisher that fits . I like it there. People know you have a safety item available also. Oilly

Shiny!!!
A suggestion... Auto parts store...Dupicolor...clear coat.
This is beginning to feel a little like the Bantam Trailer. (diversion from the task at hand) Shouldn't you be fixing mis-aligned holes in the windshield?
