I've got one of those exhaust pipes in the storeroom. Yours if you want it.

I appreciate it but hang onto it for now until I decide what I'm going to do with this thing.

Another neat (and fairly complete!) toy you've got there! I have no idea what the market is for them, but what an easy swap into your next MB. And this is coming from a "purist" kind of guy. On the flip side, despite it's super large appearance, I'm sure it is somewhat of a low maintenance backup for those severe winters you Mainiacs are susceptible to.
What was going on with the air filter? I couldn't figure out where the hose was going to. It should go to the carb, right? But it looked like it was going into the block? Or was that just an illusion?

What was going on with the air filter? I couldn't figure out where the hose was going to. It should go to the carb, right? But it looked like it was going into the block? Or was that just an illusion? The intake hose for the filter runs down to a boxy metal housing just above the manifolds. Not sure why. Here's a pic from the side and underneath. The riggings from the filter to the carb are missing here but I believe would be similar to what you would find on a Jeep. Ok, so I'm curious for some input. In a perfect world (where I had garage space as far as the eye could see and a bank account to match....) I'd keep this genset just because it's cool. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Here's where I'm at: - I paid pretty much full retail for this thing: $500. I usually don't do that but I really wanted the chance to own one even if it meant just breaking even on a later sale. However this plays out I'm still happy with that decision. - It works as a generator but so does my Lowe's Troy-Bilt for a fraction of the floor space...so it's not practical. - It runs superbly. I just played with it again today. It fires on the third crank and purrs. 120-125 compression across all 4 cylinders. It's a champ. - As much as I hate part it out the motor alone is worth more than the entire genset if I were to sell it. I could probably get a few bucks selling some of the gen parts too. - The motor in my red 3A is tired. Compression on #1 cylinder is 60. The other three are right around 100. For the money I have in the genset robbing the motor and dropping it in the 3A seems pretty appealing. It would keep the 3A running and at my leisure I could have the 3A motor rebuilt if I choose to. I could pull the genset MB motor from the 3A and sell it later on if I wanted too. $500 to repower my 3A seems like a great way to go even at the expense of destroying a generator to do it. As neat as they are, these gensets are not in real high demand. The guys that pay any money at all for them intend to rip the motors out anyway. What would you guys do?

As always my opinion is Free. Pluck the engine out of that bad boy, it's a golden nugget..... The numbers you show say it's a very late MB engine, and with that kind of compression would easily net 1K or more. Or install In your 3A, keep in mind you will need to change the front mount and flywheel. Personally I would market the engine and test the waters, you did well with your scat buggy GPW engine, if it does not net what you need, drop it in the 3A and sell it later after your original engine is rebuilt.... Not sure the rest offers much value, keep in mind a scrap yard loves copper, not sure of current prices ( are low right now) but electric motors are by the pound at the scrap yard, the generator head is heavy, the scrap yard does not know the difference and value there may surprise you, last motors I scrapped at .25 a pound, if hat scales at 200 lbs there's another $50.... There are people restoring these generators, may be some parts value there as well. The engine is the jewel. Lee

As good as it runs, I'd ask to trade for a documented overhauled period correct CJ3A engine in trade or show it running and ask 1500.00 for the MB motor. In my sickness, I'd start looking for a '45 MB to put it in. I'd keep it. Depends if you want a MB though. Unless it has a rebuild tag on it, it most likely is standard. Rare bird. Here is the real key to Jeep disease: Buy a MB that has a CJ3A engine in it running well. Bing bang , killed two with one stone.

Great answers, guys, and the ones I was hoping for (although finding an MB with a strong running 3A motor was even loftier than what I could have imagined LOL. Brilliant ).

Ohhhhh....Oilly, that clever little elf, is totally on to something, now!
Either sell it all to a G503er as a running MB engine and let him decide what to do with the entire unit or keep it until you salvage an MB. (Which is just a matter of time, for you).
If you sell it for the big bucks, then you've got your cash for your CJ3 rebuild.

I will drift a little......... Onan corporation was a big employer in Minnesota, until purchased by Cummins in the 1980's, they ruined it!.... Onan was a big military contractor for power generating equipment, many folks around my area were employed by them for years. Their equipment had a solid reputation for simplicity and long service..... The gun club I belong to was started by Onan employees just after WW2.

Cheese Caves, Snowmobiles, and Power Generating Juggernauts....The world could have crumbled away and Minnesota would have been just fine. You guys made all the necessities in-house!

Well, Santa brought me a GoPro for Christmas so I needed an excuse to use it....might as well pull the genset apart. Be warned, that's likely the first of many videos you will be subjected too now that I'm running around with this ridiculous camera in my hands (or strapped to my head....). The motor was much easier to remove than I anticipated. Took me about 3 hours. I could do it again in an hour.... The generator itself is a beast. It'll go to the scrap yard if I can engineer a way to get it there. The frame was also slated for the scrap yard but I couldn't bring myself to do it....so now it's a new workbench. Building a workbench to accommodate my vise and drill press was on the "to-do" list this weekend anyways so it's a win-win. The bench still needs some refinements but so far so good.

Very cool, scrap, repurposing, new tools, and a Mint spare engine, what's not to love.............. Well I'll explain!, several de-merits for reading the instructions for assembling the engine stand. . Not expected. BUT, redeemed by the creativity of blocking the unit up to get the hoist under it...... I did find the process very humorous Looking forward to more video from Maine!.

Cool! Nice use for the genny frame!! It's kinda ironic.....Our Grandfathers did stuff like that because they didn't have any money to spare.... Now, I see people paying money, and lots of it for the "repurposed" stuff!

After I couldn't find any info in the instruction book I actually had to go watch a couple YouTube videos on "How to use an engine stand...". What a moron. Those four brackets still don't seem sufficient to hold an entire motor..... And HG - Good luck with the software. It took me longer to make the video than it did to actually pull the motor. Slight learning curve.....good stuff though.

Have I got a deal for you Ryan! In July when you come to the Canada rally at my place, you can load the generator on the trailer in front of the jeep, and bring it up to my place! Then I can put a PTO shaft on it, run it off my 135 Massey Fergusson, and use it for a storm back up for the ranch! I'm willing to pay a few bucks for the genny, but not for the whole trip!! LOL
