Time to discuss. I will be attempting to adjust and bleed my brake system this evening. I have read the manuals and scanned the web. I want to know how you guys do it. Tips and tricks. I will apply the knowledge to a long lost thread on brake system start to finish. What say you?

I have posted pics of these wrenches here before (and was blasted for using a metric wrench on a flat fender...) but I find them very useful. Get the shoes set the correct distance from the drums before you go crazy bleeding the lines. Adding fluid to the MC will be easy with the tub off. Once the tub is in place a simple length of cardboard folded in a "V" shape makes a great funnel for topping it off through that tiny access hole in the floor of the tub. And lastly, if you haven't already installed Speed Bleeders, go get some. They make the entire process so much more manageable especially when working alone.

Brake adjusting "Tip of the Day"... Find an old junker 3/4" --12 point -- offset wrench. Grind it down as shown in the photo. You will quickly discover why you need this. Tim

I bent my own as well! The grinding is for the fronts. You can't get that Bastage in behind the king pin!!

There actually is a technical method to doing this job. A few members here and I discussed this in another web area. Lot of fun Eric and Mark! Still more needs to be discussed. 9 inch brakes are the coolest.... Everyone knows that!!!

Hopefully someone hasn't turned your drums too far already. That screws up everything and causes the shoe to make poor contact with the drum. You set the bottom as good as possible or close to the drum, and then adjust the top. It is a frustrating job. It doesn't do as the book says. I've yet to have a bottom adjustment make the shoe contact the drum. Not much wear allowed before it's a mess. Some guys with rivited shoe lining kits, put a shim under the pad to get it back out to the stock clearance. Alot of work. The new chinese drums are out of round. I end up at a "English" description of brake function: " Any appreciable Amount" is acceptable. Stock drums have a feeler gauge cutout while the Chinese ones don't. You do it by feel then. I feel that they are crap! In my old attitude on jeeps, I now go out of my way to buy original if at all possible. It fits and works. If it's made in India, I now NEVER, repeat, NEVER buy it. Oh, I hope you cleaned and antiseised all the nuts and threads on your 4 adjusters. Life is so much better then. PS------don't let dot 3 get on your newly painted stuff. You'll soon discover why I use only DOT 5 on my nice stuff. Oilly

It NEVER EVER went as easily as the book described. hahahaha...it might be me, but I at least I now know that Oily is keeping me company! As for the other "tips" above...GREAT STUFF! I'm totally going to use your ideas next time around.

HG, I should have told you last night that the slightest lining wear problem or slightly out of round drum, holes in the backing plate for the bolts being deformed, etc... will make the feeler gauging method pretty much useless. You got it all figured out, though. Haha

You're crackin' me up man. Funny stuff.
I own one of these wrenches. Not six. And I do freak out when I can't find it. (Usually berried under stuff on my workbench.)
Everyone knows what's happening here...You're using this "lack of wrench" excuse to put off the rolling chassis run for another 2 weeks! You're killing me Smalls...killing me.

Coulple things! I don't drive a Beer Truck Dot 5 brake fluid (silicone), if you contaminated your system with inferior Dot 3, your SOL , let the paint start peeling . Man up and make your own wrench!

I could make my own, but I want a vintage one for the tool box. Now go out to the Viking shed, and get me one. Bastage.....stop snickering....

I do have a wrench, I never used it!, a very small crescent wrench works just as well . Seeing that you and I are geniousesese..You know how to spell it!!!! I did make my own 3/4 and use a small crescent brand vintage shorty. I heated that bastage up with my torch and bent it in the vice. Then I ground it thin...works great! My brakes are all adjusted, and I am moving to bleeding them. I just want a Fargin correct wrench! and I don't want to pay $30.00 for it! The Moose is rubbing off on me. I am cheap, and I figure if I whine enough, one will show up in my mailbox!

I set up to bleed the brakes, complete new system from master cylinder on. I pour fluid in, set up the bleeding canister, and open the bleeder 3/4 a turn. When no bubbles appear in my line I go to close the screw! I put NO FORCE on it!! Fer snaps off!! The cylinders I used were high quality and I paid dearly for them! I am so Pissed I could S a Brick! One step forward, two steps back. I will try to obtain a new bleeder tomorrow after I have to work. And how to get the broken one out! that's another Fing story! I honestly believe that the hill I have to climb, I am almost to the top. Fargin Forces that Be want to stop me... I just don't get it... Here is a pic...

That's a bummer. You can get the bleeders at most auto parts stores. Shouldn't hold you back too much.
It appears to me that it's time to bring out the air brush again.
