You are a sick man. Jeep logo on your shoulder tatoo'd also? Your deck looks inviting and clean. Odds are one of us will remain functional at the FCT so we'll still get to go riding the rockies. I'll have my red recovery tow rope bag and super cool Warn gloves too! Dressed in style.

Went to the garage and I'm pretty sure I heard some complaining and jealous remarks from Hulett, and Dempsey. They both want to go, but this is Or's year to ride high. I told them they just have to wait their turn. Jeep life is tough. Oil

Studebaker is winning right now.
So I got bolts for the water pump this morning down in town. Bolted everything in but the radiator. Did some house work including wash/wax Lin's Audi. Then at lunch the mailman (he drives a Jeep 4 door JK wrangler too.) He dropped off the crank pulley I needed 2 days ago!
So...I undid all my work. because NOW I have all the parts to do it right. Put the right crank gasket in, put the right timing cover gasket in, pressed the new crank pulley on, used new harmonic balancer rubber parts, new lock washer. Torqued to spec, locked in place, bolted it all back up. Just started it back up and....the engine clunk is still there!
Maybe after dinner I'll move it to the garage and pull the oil pan to see what I can see. I have a pan gasket set. I'm running out of innings here.

Pan is down. No serious junk in the pan. #5 has a finger tight wrist pin nut. #4 doesn't have a wrist pin nut at all. I haven't found it yet.
This has one of those floating oil pickups. It seems kinda loose fit. I seem to recall a Willis. 134 engine noise problem related to the oil pickup tube. I'll keep looking for the klunk. So far the rod bearings seem ok. Maybe a little loose, but nothing tragic.
I'll get help rocking the engine so I can feel around for wrist pin bushings and stuff.
The noise seems to be around 1 and 2 so I can't really blame the missing/loose wrist pin nuts.

Rudy, with everything tight, what's your crankshaft end play ?.... Perhaps the crank is slapping back and fourth.
We are in Manitow Springs Colorado, rolled in around seven pm, all has been well. A long day driving today...... Pikes Peak tomorrow, then heading for the TDR..

Father in law saw a red Dodge Ram with a topper pulling an olive drab flattie with maybe 3 stars on it up 285 around noon. I got back under my pile with better lighting. Only #5 has a loose wrist pin wedge nut. Wedge is loose too. I unbolted the rod's big end, pulled it down and wedged it between crank and block. Got a socket on the nut and torqued it to max spec. Rod bearings look ok. Not great, I think oil filters are Good ideas on engines. This engine never had one. Bolted the rod back down using my assembly lube 50% STP 50% engine oil. Another possible clanker is the oil pickup float. I'm going to try the o ring trick on the pickup float tomorrow. The. I might put the oil pan back on and just run it. Crankshaft end play is .006". I just looked up the specs and it should be .003-.006. I suspect that's the clunk. But hey...it is in spec so I might run it at least for the fall color tour. Forget about the numbers I'm saying. The last 5 seconds or so show the needle moving from 32 to 38. No doubt. I bought shims online today. Not sure they fit. Am sure I won't have time to install anyway.

Rudy the end play is your problem, find a Denver rebuild shop, they will have shims.

Agree, Lee. I saw a video of a guy checking end play on a Toyota 4age engine. When he jammed the crank in and out it had the same hollow thunk noise.
I'll try to bolt the pan on tomorrow, then take everything off the front one more time so I can measure for shim ID and OD. Wish I still had my pile of Dana 60 and Toyota differential pinion shaft shims. One would probably fit. I'll try to acquire shims locally. Maybe at the differential shop. Or Drew's head shop? Or sand .003 off of the existing shim.
i'm not sure I'll make it to on Wednesday now.

Still taking apart the Studebaker...again. Hope to have it all apart Tuesday night. Will start putting it together Wednesday hopefully I'll have parts around lunchtime. 4 hours or so to put it together with luck.
I'll be late. With luck, I'll still make it on Thursday now. No matter what, I'll be there Friday night with or without the Willys.

Disassembly complete. Didn't luck out on shims.
Studebaker crank shims come in .003. .005, .007. My starret Vernier caliper shows I have a .007, .005, and a .005. No .003 in the stack. So tomorrow I'll call around Denver and see if I can find an engine or axle or bearing supply house with some shims. Meanwhile, we can hope my Studebaker shims I ordered arrive in the mail AND I got the right parts ordered and shipped! Another idea is tu see if a machine shop can turn down my timing gear or spacer .003. That would have the same effect as a thinner shim stack.

That's enough for tonight. I'll let the RTV set up tonight, add oil tomorrow, crank till I see some oil pressure. See if she'll start, let it warm up slow as possible. go for a shakedown run to town, come back check for leaks. If all goes well, I might make it to TDR for dinner tomorrow.

Steven and Studewillys were there and square! We looked at his motor and knock, and decided--------Run It! The air waves crackled with safety warnings and snide remarks that made all feel normal. I'm glad you made it. The Captain made his expertice showing in Jeeping debut on the Chinaman's Gulch rock crawl. He exited with the least damage other than special built rock crawlers. Most impressive! I got to meet The Professor and his family. That was fullfilling. We had a great showing of KJRT members and had a showdown of Willis versus Willleeeessseee! The ground shook. Dust flew. Then we finished lunch and drove off into the sunset with no members left behind. My second FCT and it was even better. Holy Cow, what a week. oil

Steven & Studewillys- Man & Machine perfectly matched! The only problem they had was when the "Fun Meter" pegged out in the red. The 10-15% performance boost generated by Sir Rudy's recent Studebaker Tested Product mods were obvious.
